Ann Francke OBE, CMI CEO provided an overview of chartered bodies, explaining their historical significance, rigorous standards, and the public benefit they offer. She highlighted the role of chartered status in ensuring quality and competence in various professions.

Top Chartered Body facts to remember:

  • Chartered bodies are a British unique selling point, with a history dating back to the 1800s. There are about 400 Chartered Bodies in the UK, each awarded royal charter status by the monarch and the Privy Council, signifying a real privilege.
  • Every Chartered Body meets rigorous standards of public trust, education, and governance. These bodies exist for public benefit and many are charities, capable of awarding the distinctive hallmark of quality known as the Charter designation.
  • Chartered status signifies being at the pinnacle of one’s profession, having passed rigorous standards of practical employer-developed skills, training, and qualifications. Chartered bodies support careers at every level, from entry to senior positions.
  • Chartered Bodies work with over 22,000 employers and 3,000 training partners across the UK, delivering qualifications to over half a million learners. This collaboration ensures widespread influence and benefits for both individuals and organisations.
  • Chartered Bodies award about 275,000 qualifications annually, including over 20,000 chartered designations. These qualifications range from entry-level (Level 3) to doctorate level (Level 8), demonstrating the extensive reach and impact of chartered bodies.
