Green Skills May 2024 webinars:

Following on from the highly successful Green Skills workshop on 29th February 2024 held in Brussels, two further action orientated webinars will take place on 29th and 30th May 2024 with the ambition to create collaborative UK-EU partnerships which enable skills development in the Sustainable Construction and Renewable Energy sectors.

Hosted again through the partnership of UK Mission to the European Union and the UK Skills Partnership, supported by the Department of Business and Trade’s International Education Team these webinars will focus on turning the outcomes of the previous workshop into sustainable action plans for the longer term.

Outline Programme:

The webinars will include

  • A short opening to provide context
  • Presentations from:
    • EU and UK skills organisations setting out further context and showcasing focus points that will be of interest for the following roundtable discussion.
  • A Roundtable discussion will take up the bulk of the time during which all are encouraged to contribute and get involved in discussing key and emerging themes.
  • Action plan development – creation of sub-working groups

During the webinar there will be an opportunity to network and collaborate with like-minded colleagues.

Renewable Energy sectors

  • Understood as a dynamic, rapidly evolving field focused on harnessing environmentally sustainable sources of power to meet the world’s energy needs, in which professionals engage in research, development, implementation, and management of technologies that generate energy from renewable resources such as solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass.
  • Skills e.g. include expertise in renewable energy technologies, project management, environmental science, engineering, policy analysis, as well as understanding and operating with/ within regulatory frameworks, financing models, and the ability to innovate and adapt to emerging trends.
  • Jobs would include e.g. wind turbine technicians, urban planners, solar PV & batteries installers, renewable project planner and designer.

The Sustainable Construction sector

  • Involves a multidisciplinary approach to designing, constructing, and managing buildings and infrastructure aimed at minimising environmental impact, conserving resources, and promoting long-term resilience, demanding a diverse skill set in sustainable design principles, green building certifications, energy-efficient technologies, and materials expertise.
  • Skills include the technical proficiency (incorporation of renewable energy systems, life cycle assessments, implementation of eco-friendly construction practices), a deep understanding of environmental regulations and green buildings standards, knowledge of e.g. water conservation methods, waste reduction strategies, and green certification standards.
  • Jobs include e.g. architects, engineers, project managers, sustainability consultants, and skilled tradespeople specialising in eco-friendly construction practices.
