OMAN – Management Development
Summary
As part of its commitment to developing future leaders, the Royal Oman Police sought to strengthen leadership capability at first-line management level. While established development pathways already existed for more senior ranks, the organisation recognised the need to invest earlier in the leadership journey, equipping First Lieutenants with the skills required to lead people, manage performance and support organisational objectives.
To support this strategic priority, the Royal Oman Police selected Sterling Training Ltd to design and deliver a leadership and supervisory development programme that would provide practical, immediately applicable management skills for its emerging leaders.
Challenge
The programme was to be delivered at the prestigious Royal Oman Police Academy in Nizwa, Oman, to participants with a broad range of English language proficiency. Traditionally, programmes of this nature would require interpretation from English into Arabic, increasing both cost and resource requirements.
The challenge was to create an engaging, learner-centred leadership development programme that remained accessible to participants with varying language abilities while maintaining a highly interactive and practical learning experience.
Solution
Working closely with senior stakeholders, Sterling designed a bespoke leadership and workforce development programme focused on the key capabilities required by first-line managers.
The programme was initially delivered as a five-day course before being expanded to seven days in response to organisational needs and positive participant feedback.
Rather than relying on traditional lecture-based delivery, Sterling adapted its learner-centred methodology to accommodate participants with English language abilities ranging from A1 to C1. This innovative approach removed the need for interpreters while retaining high levels of engagement and participation.
The programme focused on helping participants to:
- Understand the relationship between leadership and management.
- Translate organisational vision and values into meaningful team objectives.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, senior leaders and team members.
- Manage employee performance and encourage accountability.
- Improve planning, prioritisation and resource management.
Since its launch, the programme has been delivered to X cohorts of emerging leaders within the Royal Oman Police, helping to develop a stronger pipeline of future managers and leaders.
Participants consistently describe the programme as practical, relevant and immediately applicable, with many implementing new leadership techniques and approaches in the workplace soon after completing the course.
The programme has contributed to:
- Increased leadership confidence amongst first-line managers
- Greater clarity around team objectives, expectations and accountability
- Improved communication across teams and departments.
- A stronger pipeline of leaders aligned with organisational priorities and future workforce needs
- The successful delivery of an interactive leadership programme within a multilingual learning environment without the need for interpreters
“The Royal Oman Police would like to express its appreciation for the exceptional and effective courses provided by Sterling Training. The feedback from our officers has been excellent and they have commented on how the course offers practical skills which will help them to manage our valuable personnel both now and into the future.“
Lieutenant Colonel Yahya Ali Al Anbouri, Assistant Director of Training, Royal Oman Police
