Europe -Systems Thinking Leadership
Summary
Georgina Wilson founded BUD Leaders to help organisations embed equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), particularly for women of colour, through systemic leadership development. BUD Leaders works with many of London’s largest firms to develop their workforce. Georgina wanted to better understand how to diagnose and solve their challenges.
She decided to invest in herself through the master’s degree-level systems thinking apprenticeship programme. The course provided Georgina with new tools and frameworks that strengthened BUD Leaders’ approach to inclusive leadership. Drawing on this learning, Georgina refined and expanded BUD Leaders’ programmes, to support senior leaders in challenging traditional models and driving cultural change.
This example illustrates how targeted skills development can enhance existing ventures and amplify their impact. BUD Leaders continues to deliver leadership programmes across the UK, with growing relevance to global conversations around inclusive and systemic change.
The JGA Group was founded in London more than 30 years ago. They provide specialist niche education, training and apprenticeships. JGA’s achievement rates and quality are substantially above the norm and they are the British market leaders in multiple apprenticeship disciplines.
The company holds the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Promoting Opportunity and is delighted to be the 4-time winner of the West London Business Best Education & Training Provider award. Working in close partnership with employers, JGA designs and delivers a range of niche apprenticeships from post-16 to master’s degree level for the public, private and third sectors.
The systems thinking apprenticeship is designed to support managers and leaders in large organisations to better understand the forces which determine action (and inaction) in their contexts. Whether these are related to people, attitude, culture, external factors, legislation, organisational structure, unionism, professional discipline and norms or the many other forces internal or external which govern the impact of activity in a given environment and how to best achieve your objectives.
Challenge
BUD Leaders was established to address the persistent lack of diversity and inclusion in leadership roles across UK organisations, with a specific focus on creating more opportunities for small to medium-sized Black and Brown women-led enterprises. Georgina recognised that systemic barriers often prevent these leaders from accessing the same opportunities, resources, and recognition as their peers.
While BUD Leaders was already delivering impactful programmes, Georgina wanted to strengthen the organisation’s strategic approach. She enrolled in JGA Group’s Systems Thinking apprenticeship to deepen her understanding of how interconnected systems shape leadership, power, and organisational culture.
The insights gained from the course helped Georgina refine BUD Leaders’ content and delivery, making it more aligned with the complex challenges leaders face today. This included enhancing the programme’s ability to support leaders in identifying and dismantling structural inequalities within their organisations.
BUD Leaders works with global corporations such as Sky, GSK, and Transport for London to implement meaningful change. The challenge was not just about improving leadership skills – it was about shifting mindsets and enabling leaders to drive lasting, systemic transformation.
Solution
BUD Leaders delivers leadership programmes that combine systems thinking with EDI principles. After completing the apprenticeship, Georgina enhanced the organisation’s offer by integrating:
- Soft System Methodology
- Workshops on leadership, power, and systemic change
- Coaching and mentoring to support inclusive leadership development
- Peer learning groups for shared reflection
- Tools for embedding EDI into strategy and operations
- Viable Systems Modelling to help manage stakeholders and understand their motivation.
- Critical Systems Heuristics
These programmes are designed for senior leaders and tailored to organisational needs. The updated approach helps participants understand root causes of inequality and lead with clarity and purpose.
Georgina Wilson’s journey highlights the power of systems thinking in driving change, particularly in areas of equity and inclusion. Her experience with the apprenticeship has not only strengthened her ability to lead BUD Leaders but also positioned her as a thought leader in using systems thinking to address societal challenges. As she continues to embed these principles in her work, her impact is set to grow, inspiring others to rethink how they approach complex problems, encouraging cultural shifts across sectors, ultimately promoting fairer, more representative workplaces.
