Progressing Skills for Net Zero

On 10th and 11th September 2024, the UK Mission to the European Union, the UK Skills Partnership and the Department of Business and Trade’s International Education Team hosted two webinars to progress partnerships between UK and EU organisations.

Progressing Skills for Net Zero: following on from the highly successful Green Skills workshop on 29th February 2024 held in Brussels, these webinars set out the ambition to create collaborative UK-EU partnerships which enable skills for Net Zero development in the Sustainable Construction and Renewable Energy sectors.

Net Zero Skills Series Objectives

  1. Support ongoing efforts to deliver the skilled workforce needed for the transition to Net Zero.
  2. Reduce the competition for global talent through encouraging UK-EU mobility of green skilled workers.
  3. Support efforts to promote UK- EU collaboration on international green skills development.

A range of skills and training providers, further education and national colleges, awarding organisations, industry and trade bodies, enterprises, trade bodies, skills technology suppliers, sector skills councils, institutes of technology, national skills academies, centres of excellence and more besides, join these action orientated workshops to create a legacy that bridges the Net Zero skills gap. Their time and contributions are highly appreciated.

The Skills for Net Zero webinars included presentations from expert presenters from EU and UK skills organisations setting out further context and showcasing focus points relating to skills for Net Zero.

The presenters the Sustainable Construction Workshop were:

  • Lilia Zestea, Head of Lifelong Learning Department at Centre of Excellence in Construction, Moldova.
  • David McClymont, Vice Principle from South Thames Colleges Group.

The presenters for the Renewable Energy Workshop were:

  • David Timis, Global Communications & Public Affairs Manager at Generation.
  • Lydia Malley, Head of the Energy Institute Academy.

After the presentations, colleagues engaged in lively and informative roundtable discussions relating to key and emerging themes and to create working groups.  The working groups are as follows:

  • Sustainable Construction sector curriculum and qualifications
  • Renewable Energy sector curriculum and qualifications
  • Workforce labour market intelligence
  • Attracting and retaining talent
